Community Projects 2017-18
Career Classes
Upper level students participated in a weekly career development seminar. Professionals from Cabrera and other communities nearby came to share their experiences and insights into fields ranging from agronomy to cosmetology to entrepreneurship.
Sewing Classes
Upper level students learned basic sewing skills from a community volunteer, Birgit Hinrichsen, such as replacing buttons, mending tears and various stitching styles. As the year progressed they moved on to more difficult projects such as quilting and making stuffed animals.
Reading Buddies
The upper level students paired up with our 1st/2nd graders once a week to read together. For the older students, it was a wonderful opportunity to practice intonation and fluency, whereas the younger students were able to show off their developing reading skills and bond with an older role-model. This time made reading a fun and personal activity rather than just an academic chore. In addition, the 3rd/4th grade class paired up with a reading buddy from the class and a volunteer from our community, Sheryl Filer. Each student had the opportunity to read out loud to practice pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension.
Yoga And Mindfulness
The 1st through 4th graders practiced gentle stretches, poses, and breathing exercises. They were taught to focus, quiet their minds with meditation, and be one with nature. They explored positivity and values through stories, art, and discussion. Throughout the year they created outside manadalas and totem poles with natural and recycled materials.
Protección Animal Cabrera (PAC)
Protecion Animal Cabrera worked with Faro de Cabrera with presentations educating the students on how to properly care for the animals in need, what some of the specific needs of the community were, and various ways they could help. One class fundraised to donate money to help the organization feed and vaccinate dogs abandoned at the beach. A teacher also volunteered working in sterilization clinics, helped to feed and vaccinate animals, as well as fostr abandoned dogs until they were able to find a good home. It was wonderful to join with an organization within our community and to feel that our combined efforts were making a difference.
Field Trips
Faro de Cabrera had two main field trips in May.
The 1ts/2nd grade class went to Rancho Magante where they learned about organic farming, chocolate production, and the various pollinators that help in that process.
The 3rd/4th grade combined with the upper levels went to the Scientific Reserve Loma Quita Espuela to learn about reforestation, endemic plants and a rain forest habitat.
